We have been searching for another vintage quilt that we wanted to reproduce as a block of the month program and the moment we saw this one, we knew we had found the one. I fell in love with this warm, vintage sampler the moment I came across the picture. There is just something about this very autumnal color scheme that just sings to me... literally! We will be using this quilt as our layout and as our inspiration both in many of the blocks as well as the color scheme, but we will not be reproducing it in its exact form. This is what we know so far: We are keeping most of the pieced blocks. We will ONLY keep 5-6 of the most simple applique blocks- the ones with the large shapes, made from 1 or 2 fabrics only. We will talk through our method of applique as well as alternate methods you could use. For those of you who are literally afraid of the word “applique”... do not fear. You can always repeat some of the other blocks, or add in some of your own... but we sure do hope that you will give these simple beauties a try. We didn’t want to take them out in their entirety because they add so much to the overall beauty of the quilt. The pieces that you see in the center uses a technique called “broderie perse” where floral fabrics are fussy cut out of a fabric, the edges are turned under and they are appliqued onto a plain background to create a new design. We are not sure what we are going to do with that area yet until we get there! We are either going to find the perfect floral to add into our own quilt or I will design a larger block for the center of the quilt that somehow has the same feel without being appliqué! It is quite possible that we will get create with a floral print and just add some plain floral block into our overall quilt to mimic the feel as much as possible without adding any difficulty!

Our color palette mimics this one as closely as possible with the main colors being a soft tangerine, tomato red, orange, caramel, light blue, green, brown, soft pink, tan. Our fabrics will include solids, crossweaves, plaids, small prints as well as cream background prints and an ivory solid base.

For 12 months, each month we will send you a packet of fabric and instructions for 4-5 block patterns each time. As you can see, there are many blocks in this quilt that are repeated so most months you will only be making 1 or 2 block types, but you will be making several of each type of block. Program will include binding and all the directions and patterns. The quilt will be based on 9" blocks and will measure app. 72” square.
